The KP Tank Terrorist Attack claimed the lives of 15 people, including 14 security personnel, after militants targeted a joint police checkpost in Tank district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in the early hours of Friday.
According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the assault was carried out by Fitna al Khawarij, the term used by the Pakistani military for members of the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Despite the deadly attack, security forces successfully repelled the assault and killed 15 terrorists during the operation.
Security Forces Foil Initial Assault
ISPR said the attackers initially attempted to breach the perimeter of the joint checkpost but were met with a swift and determined response from security personnel.
The military stated that the troops displayed exceptional courage and professionalism, preventing the militants from overrunning the facility.
During the intense exchange of fire, 15 militants were neutralized, stopping the initial assault.
Explosive-Laden Vehicle Causes Heavy Damage
After failing to penetrate the checkpost, the militants rammed an explosive-filled vehicle into the perimeter wall.
The massive explosion caused severe structural damage to the security installation, resulting in the martyrdom of 15 individuals, including:
- 12 Pakistan Army soldiers
- 2 police personnel
- 1 Forest Department official
ISPR paid tribute to the fallen personnel, describing them as brave defenders who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
Sanitisation Operation Underway
Following the attack, security forces launched a sanitisation operation in the surrounding area to locate and eliminate any remaining militants.
The military reaffirmed that Pakistan’s ongoing counterterrorism campaign under Operation Azm-i-Istehkam, approved by the Federal Apex Committee under the National Action Plan, will continue without interruption.
ISPR stated that security forces remain fully committed to eliminating foreign-sponsored terrorism and ensuring the country’s security.
Recent Rise in Terrorist Violence
The KP Tank Terrorist Attack comes amid an increase in militant violence across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Just last week, ISPR announced that security forces had killed 24 terrorists during intelligence-based operations in Bannu district and nearby areas following a spike in attacks targeting police and security installations.
Earlier this year, a suicide bombing at the Fateh Khel police post in Bannu also claimed the lives of 15 police personnel after militants used an explosive-laden vehicle to attack the facility.
Security Situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
According to the Centre for Research and Security Studies (CRSS) Annual Security Report 2025, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa witnessed a sharp increase in violence, with fatalities rising from 1,620 in 2024 to 2,331 in 2025.
The province, along with Balochistan, continues to face frequent militant attacks targeting law enforcement agencies, prompting intensified counterterrorism operations across the region.
Nation Pays Tribute to the Fallen Heroes
The sacrifice of the security personnel in the KP Tank Terrorist Attack has once again highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by Pakistan’s security forces in combating terrorism.
Authorities have vowed to continue operations against militant networks and reaffirmed that those responsible for attacks on civilians and security personnel will be brought to justice.
